An impressionistic fantasy landscape evoking the arid climate and mountainous terrain of the West, Colorado River is certainly a unique piece in Richard Van Vliet’s portfolio. One observer noticed that on this and similar paintings, the bold use of oranges and golds is strikingly sets it apart from what would be called “Southwestern” art. The blue river bracketed by a pointilist-like shoreline takes on a life of its own with swirled color strokes, giving a feeling of whitewater, while the block strokes on the landscape above give impressions of adobe. White snowcapped peaks with metallic tinges, look like rock veins from far away. Meanwhile, the sun and sky utilize those bold uses of orange and terra cotta blending.

“Time Travel” is Richard’s masterpiece according to some. Its detail and transitions are boldly unique. One of his more Dali influe
nced works, it invokes images of pyramids, outer space, dragons, spirals, and much more. It, like many of his work can be called Fantasy Landscape, yet frequently Van Vliet takes one above and beyond any landform.
